Enjoy the arts with performances this week

Time is running out to enjoy this season’s fine & performing arts events in some of the magnificent venues at North Central College. Call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit www.northcentralcollege.edu/show for a full schedule or to order tickets.

On Friday, May 29, join North Central College’s Concert Choir, directed by Professor of Music Jeordano Martinez, for a special graduation concert featuring a repertoire of its extended work with full orchestra. The performance begins at 8 p.m. Friday in Wentz Concert Hall.

On Saturday, May 30, North Central College students will perform arias and scenes from the legendary operas “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni” and “Cosi fan Tutte” by Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte as part of an Opera Workshop. Matt Boresi, visiting lecturer of theatre, and Jeordano Martinez, professor of music, will give theatrical and music direction, with accompaniment by Jon Warfel, visiting lecturer of music. The evening begins at 8 p.m. Saturday in Wentz Concert Hall.

Two big events round out the weekend and the month on Sunday, May 31. The student-run Cardinal Dance Company presents its second annual show at 3 p.m. Sunday in Pfeiffer Hall. The group choreographs and performs its own routines to a variety of music. Admission is only $3/person at the door!

Finally, North Central College welcomes East Meets West Music Arts for the memorial concert and presentation, “Ode to Freedom,” marking the 20th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre in China and the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event begins at 7:45 p.m. Sunday in Wentz Concert Hall and includes a candle-lighting ceremony, commemorative musical performance and slide show, and a forum with special guests Lu Decheng, one of three heroes at Tiananmen Square, and Wei Jingsheng, prominent Chinese human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee. Admission is free but donations are welcome.

Student performers take center stage this week

You can enjoy a concert virtually every night this week at North Central College! Call the North Central College Box Office at 630-637-SHOW (7469) or visit www.northcentralcollege.edu/show for a full schedule or to order tickets.

On Tuesday, May 19, North Central’s own Concert Winds ensemble under the direction of Larry Van Oyen, associate professor of music and director of bands, presents its final concert of the year, in the Wentz Concert Hall.

If jazz is your thing, you’ll want to catch “A Great Evening of Jazz” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in Wentz Concert Hall, featuring North Central’s Big Band, Jazz Combos and Vocal Jazz Ensemble performing a variety of jazz arrangements under the direction of the jazz studies faculty.

If you’d rather appreciate how amazing vocal ensembles sound in the Wentz Concert Hall, come see North Central’s 16-voice Chamber Singers wrap up its inaugural season with its “Metamorphosis” concerty at 7:30 p.m. Thursday May 21. Enjoy a cappella music from Bach to the Beatles!

To wrap up the week leading up to Memorial Day, you can catch the final weekend of the family-friendly musical “Honk!” in Pfeiffer Hall as young actors and singers are featured in North Central College’s first spring community musical theatre production. “Honk!” is an award-winning show based on Hans Christian Anderson’s story of the Ugly Duckling. Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday, May 22 and at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, May 23.

For theatre lovers, a compilation of excerpts from prose, poetry, plays and original writing will be showcased in a student-directed project “Women and Madness” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday,  May 14-16, in Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave.

Family entertainment takes center stage in Pfeiffer Hall as young actors and singers are featured in North Central College’s first spring community musical theatre production, “Honk!,” an award-winning show based on Hans Christian Anderson’s story of the Ugly Duckling. Six performances of “Honk!” will be staged: on May 15 and 22 at 7 p.m. and May 16 and 23 at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

For music lovers, Youth Symphony of DuPage performs at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 17, in Pfeiffer Hall. And North Central College’s Women’s Chorale performs its 15th anniversary concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 17, in Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center.
