Music, theatre and art on tap this week

Another busy week full of Fine & Performing Arts events is on tap this week at North Central College, coming on the heels of phenomenal performances by Ben Vereen and Rachel Barton Pine.

On Wednesday, April 1, meet sculptor and photographer Tuck Langland from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., for the opening of his exhibit “People: Variations on a Theme,” which runs through May 2 in Schoenherr Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Center. A professional sculptor for more than 40 years, his public sculptures are found throughout the world.

Friday through Sunday, April 3-5, musical theatre students present “Oh, Coward!”: A revue of songs, biographical anecdotes and sketches that celebrates the life and work of British legend Noel Coward. Under the direction of Matt Boresi ’99, visiting lecturer of theatre, with musical direction by Jeordano Martinez, professor of music, 13 students will present four shows on Friday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, April 4, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 pm.; and Sunday, April 5, at 2 p.m. in Madden Theater at the Fine Arts Center.

On Friday, April 3, the extraordinary talents of North Central College’s internationally acclaimed jazz faculty will be featured in various configurations—duet, trio, quartet and the entire ensemble—at 8:00 p.m. in Wentz Concert Hall. The artists, each known for their work as jazz performers and recording artists, include vocalist Janice Borla, saxophonist Mitch Paliga, trumpeter Doug Scharf, trombonist T.S. Galloway, guitarist John McLean, pianist Frank Caruso, bassist Larry Kohut and drummer Jack Mouse.

Finally, on Saturday, April 4, the College presents the Salzburg Chamber Soloists, an ensemble that performs orchestral chamber music with the freedom of soloists. Formed from a group of superior musicians, the ensemble has received highest accolades from press, presenters and audiences alike and performed at prestigious festivals around the world.  The 21-person ensemble will perform at 8:00 p.m. in Wentz Concert Hall.
