October 1 annual campus-wide fire drill

The College will conduct a fire drill for 13 of its buildings on Thursday, Oct. 1. The residence halls and academic houses will not be included in this exercise, but will have separate drills in the coming weeks. The drills on Thursday will be staggered over a two-hour period as follows:

  • 2:00 p.m.— Old Main, Kroehler Science Center
  • 2:15 p.m.— Meiley-Swallow Hall
  • 2:30 p.m.— Pfeiffer Hall, Carnegie Hall
  • 2:45 p.m.— White Activities Center, Larrance Academic Center
  • 3:00 p.m.— Kiekhofer Hall, Oesterle Library
  • 3:15 p.m.— Wentz Concert Hall and Fine Arts Center
  • 3:30 p.m.— Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, Merner Field House
  • 3:45 p.m.— Goldspohn Hall

When each building alarm has sounded, people will need to immediately evacuate the building using the stairs and go to the designated evacuation area. This location is posted in each classroom and building. Evacuation will take approximately two minutes. Faculty are asked to keep students together and staff supervisors to keep staff together so the building drill leader can colletct the names of everyone in the evacuation area. Once the fire department has checked the building, an all-clear announcement will be made and everyone can return to your building.

Students working to restore MAP funding

North Central students are joining thousands of students statewide to speak out about the recent State of Illinois cuts in funding for the student aid need-based Monetary Award Program (MAP). The program was cut by nearly $200 million this year. Approximately 140,000 eligible students statewide will not receive any financial aid from the program in January unless legislators restore the $200 million they cut.

MAP cmsThis week, members of the Academic Life Committee of North Central’s Student Governing Association (SGA) are helping students write their state legislators. They’ve set up computer stations in the lobby of the White Activities Center (WAC) and Kaufman Dining Hall to assist students in identifying and emailing their state legislators a form letter right from the computer station. SGA members will be on hand each day in WAC from noon to 2 p.m. and in Kaufman Monday and Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Jennie Baron ’11, SGA’s academic life officer, is organizing the letter-writing campaign. “We want students to know they have a voice and can make a difference if they speak up. This MAP cut is a huge thing, especially for anyone who relies on funding for their education,” she says.

Gov. Quinn will host a town hall meeting where students with MAP awards will have an opportunity to testify on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the University of Illinois Chicago. Justin Lynch ’11 and Laurie Hamen, vice president for enrollment management, athletics and student affairs, will join several hundred students and college faculty and administrators at the meeting. Lynch is a MAP grant recipient whose funding is in jeopardy; he’s also an academic life senator with SGA.

For more information contact Baron at jvbaron@noctrl.edu, or Joe Wilmarth Tyna, student affairs specialist and SGA advisor, at jpwilmarthtyna@noctrl.edu.
