connections

In four weeks it is amazing the connections you can make with people. This time next week, my students will be just about ready to head home for the rest of the summer. No more waking up at 6am to make a bus to catch a bus to come out to NC. Or trying to organize a grueling schedule that incorporates this camp, plus another job, plus football. Their dedication to the program is unbelievable.

In the past four weeks, I have tried to get to know each and every student. In reading their writing, I have come to know who they are in the classroom, and I have been given a brief glimpse of who they are at home, and where they want to go. It is wonderful to see their hopes and dreams and their plans to achieve what they want out of life.

Now, as an RA we are trained to build community, take part in our residents live, etc. But this experience is totally different. In the halls, we have 30 weeks with our students and here it is only 4. However, with this camp, as a teacher, I am responsible for their learning and helping them grow as students. On the floor, I do the same, but it is a different dynamic of peer-to-peer contact. Essentially, I will really miss these students!

In other news, the Fire have broken their losing streak! Securing 3rd place in the East, they have potential to catch up and make up the ground they lost on their mental vacation in June!
