Hello. My Name Is…

We’ve all been to those events where nobody knows anyone, and whoever is running the show makes you write your name on a silly name tag with a red border with a thick black sharpie.  As much as we tend to loath that hideous invention, the name tag in all of it’s tacky glory, because they make us feel down right ridiculous, we secretly inside love the fact that it saves us from the humiliation of not knowing names. For my own sake, so I don’t feel like a total loser while writing to you all here, I’m going to make this blog into one, slightly larger and more detailed name tag.

 Hello. My Name Is…

Megan Elizabeth Smith.  I was born in St. Louis, MO, but grew up in the Big “O”, O-Town, or as we sometimes like to simply put it, Omaha is my Homaha, (that’s Omaha Nebraska if you haven’t caught on). In high school I was involved in the debate team, swim team, the mustang mentoring program, youth group leadership team, literary magazine, and Latin club. I was not however involved in sleeping or having much of a social life due to everything I was involved it :). I loved it though, and looking back have no regrets, which it what it’s all about right?

I feel now that I must clear up some common misconceptions about O-town, because I know you are all dying to know. Yes we have electricity, yes we have running water, no we do not ride cows, horses, goats, or any kind of contraption pulled by livestock to school, no not everyone is a farmer, no our dress code does not consist of overalls and plaid shirts, yes we are obsessed with high school and college football, no we do not care who goes to the super bowl, and yes, we do have an amazing music scene (hello, saddle creek records anyone???). It is also true that out of my school of 2500 students, and graduating class of around 560, that ninety five percent of the students have gone, will go, or are planning on transferring to UNL ONLY to get into the Husker games for free.

So I’m sure you are all wondering by now, “Well then, how in the heck did she end up at North Central of all places?” I reply to that statement with a ” Cool your jets kid, I’m getting there!” I began my long and arduous college hunting process the summer before my senior year.  At this point I was not only convinced that I was going to become a surgeon, and possibly work with Doctors without Boarders, but also that it was essential that I find the “perfect college”.  Slowly as the year went on, I fell out of love with the idea of cutting living people open, and in love with the idea of working overseas with underprivileged people who need help.  Six college acceptance letters later, I was still lost. This is when one of my good friends stepped in.  He had just come back from a campus visit here at NCC and had fallen in love. He knew of my college dilemmas, and proceeded to hand me the address to the NCC website. I figured that none of the colleges I had been accepted to truly impressed me, and seeing as I would be paying for my schooling, I needed to be quite impressed, and one more couldn’t hurt! So I applied, came on a campus visit, and FELL IN LOVE. I know it’s kind of silly, but I got “the feeling”,when it’s just right, and that got me excited.

And now, I’m a freshman at NCC, an International Relations major and looking into Anthropology as a possible second major or minor. I am extremely involved in campus ministries, the Union (an awesome venue 3 blocks of campus), S.L.I.P. (a ceramics club), NCC Green (an unofficial environmental group), the pre-law club, the breakfast club,  and new clubs that I want to get involved in keep popping up every day! I am officially addicted to the Jamba Juice located just down the street, and the basement of the library is the only place I can really focus on school work!

So this is me in a nutshell.  I’m just a 19 year old freshman in love with her school and everything it has to offer. I hope you enjoyed reading my…quite long actually…name tag! Feel free to post questions or just comments in general!

 Shalom. Megan.
