Information Literacy @ NCC

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

As we all settle in to another academic year, this seems like a good time to post a brief description of the library’s information literacy instruction program. First year students will encounter the following opportunities to develop their information research skills:

  • English 115 – research basics using library resources
  • IDS 125 – enhanced research using library resources
  • English 125 – a combination of basic and advanced research skills

What does this mean? By the end of their freshman year, students should be able to plan a research project, incorporating a variety of appropriate library resources to locate academically reliable information that answers a research question. They should efficiently utilize library databases to accomplish this task, and the sources they include in their final project should have been selected, after careful evaluation,  for their credibility.

In order to help students further develop their research skills, Oesterle’s librarians encourage faculty to schedule subject based library instruction sessions addressing specific assignments.  Library liaisons are: Aimee Walker (Ex. 5708) – E&B,  Belinda Cheek (Ex.5703) – HTB, Emily Prather-Rogers (Ex.5709) – Science, Rosemary Henders (Ex.5707) – A&L. At the same time, students should always feel free to contact any of the librarians or the staff member on duty at the Information Services Desk with their research questions.
