In observance of the 4th of July holiday, Oesterle Library will be closed Friday, July 3rd and Saturday, July 4th.  Oesterle Library will be open regular summer session hours Thursday, July 2nd and Sunday, July 5th.

This summer first year students will be participating in the First Year Experience (FYE) program here at North Central College.  This program is designed to help first year students make the transition to college life.  As a part of this program all first year students will be expected to read “Coyotes” by Ted Conover during the summer.  Then the students will be discussing the book in their FYE course during the fall term.  While all first year students will be receiving a copy of “Coyotes,” the book is also available for two day check-out at the library’s Information Services Desk.

Oesterle Library has created a guide to Ted Conover’s “Coyotes” filled with library and web resources on the topic of migrant farm workers, for those students interested in learning more about the subject of the book.  In addition to resources on the topic of migrant farm works, the library’s guide also includes reviews of “Coyotes.”

The library’s catalog, CardinalCat, and the I-Share catalog used for getting books through interlibrary loan from other Illinois colleges will be upgrading to a new version of the software used to run it beginning Sunday, June 14th around 3:00 am.  The upgrade process is expected to complete on Wednesday, June 17th.

During this time you will be able to continue to search the current version of CardinalCat and check materials out from Oesterle Library. However, you will not be able to check your account, renew items online or order books through I-Share.

Once the upgrade is complete you will see a new look to CardinalCat and the I-Share catalog, as well as some added features and functions.  We apologize for any inconvenience during this upgrade process.

Make sure to check out a story published in the Daily Herald about Oesterle Library’s Special Collections and Emily Prather,Technical Services Coordinator, who manages the Special Collections.

The Library’s Special Collections, which includes a 1632 first edition of Galileo’s “Dialogue,” some documents containing signatures of U.S. Presidents, an Abraham Lincoln collection, and jazz books and sheet music, is generally available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Tholin Chicagoana Collection, which is also a part of the library’s special collection is open to the public during regular library hours.

During finals week Oesterle Library will be open June 8th and 9th from 8 am to midnight, June 10th, 11th and 12th from 8 am to 4 pm, and June 13th and 14th we will be closed.  Summer session hours will begin Monday, June 15th.  See the complete library hours for a listing of summer session hours.

Please keep in mind that all students need to have all checked-out library books returned by Wednesday at 4:00 pm, when the library closes.  This is especially important for graduating seniors.

The latest monograph in the North Central College Undergraduate Archives Publication series is now available on the Archives web site. Written by Nicholas Guido ‘09, “Inclusive Theatre: A History of North Central Theatre from 1955 – 2008“ is the fifth monograph in the series, which encourages the use of primary sources from the College’s archives.

Graduating students can continue to utilize the Oesterle Library collection by requesting an Alumni Courtesy Borrowers Card. To obtain a free Alumni Card simply stop by the Information Services Desk and complete an application.  Once the application has been processed, and Alumni status has been confirmed, a card will be issued to the applicant.

With a Courtesy Borrowers Card alumni can check- out 3 books at a time for a 3 week time period. The non-circulating reference and periodicals collections are available for in-house use.
