Oesterle Library Display Recognizes Constitution Day & Banned Books Week
“We the people…,” a new exhibit in the lobby of Oesterle Library recognizes and celebrates Constitution Day and Banned Books Week by featuring books highlighting the right to free speech.
Constitution Day recognizes the anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787. The Library of Congress provides access to primary source documents from the Constitutional Convention at http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/continental/index.html. Ideas for celebrating Constitution Day may be found at http://constitutioncenter.org/ConstitutionDay/
According to the American Library Association, Banned Books Week “celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them” (http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksweek/bannedbooksweek.cfm). Oesterle Library will host a Read Out during Campus Coffee (date TBD). The campus community is invited to attend to hear students, faculty, and staff read passages from banned and challenged books.
